So some exciting news: GWCA won grant money from the Weaver’s Award to help fund a project in solar light installation throughout the neighborhood and this was the first grant I ever wrote! When writing this grant, the collaboration and intersection of multiple placement areas and placements became clear to me. First of all to write the grant, I relied on the help of resources of Central Baltimore Partnership and Jubilee Baltimore. These two organizations are steps away from Greenmount West, and it is clear that they are invested in the healthy, community-led development of the neighborhood. I was able to communicate by email and in person to get tips on grant writing as well as ideas for the grant proposal. It is clear from the very first week that a lot of organizations in the area have Greenmount West’s best interest in mind and collaboration is the best way to keep that interest in mind.

The idea for solar-powered porch lights came to me when I was actually working with youth during a week-long camp held within Greenmount West focusing on empowering the youth with education about Baltimore’s history of racist development practices and social justice. Now, my placement area is technically neighborhood improvement, but we also dabble in all the other placement areas because as a nonprofit, Greenmount West knows there is power in leveraging all those areas. It is clear that nonprofit management has made community organizing easier and education makes that organizing more powerful -- we specifically focus on neighborhood improvement which relies heavily on food access, and all of this circles backs to the health of the neighbors.

While I have absolutely no idea what I want to do in my life, I do know that community will somehow be involved with my future profession and my internship at Greenmount West Community Association has taught me a lot about working with community. One of the most eye-opening lessons I had this past week is that people will have different ideas of what community is, how to “help” community, and what their role is in community and that can severely impact the collective impact they have on the community. I learned this because there are multiple organizations that are invested in the wellbeing of Greenmount West, but they all have different methods on how to be invested.
This can cause a lot of tension, and from what I can see is that it can be harmful to the functioning of all these organizations. Of course as an outsider looking in, it was easy for me to be critical of how some of these organizations run because I have a very limited understanding of the complexities of community organizing and planning. Recently, I came into a situation quite judgmental of how one of the organizations in Greenmount West runs and after reflecting, I realized that I went into the situation with a lack of understanding -- I was only looking from the perspective of my understanding of an organization’s role in the neighborhood. I think after this situation, I learned that giving the benefit of doubt and going into situations with the intention of learning and not judging is so important. While that seems so simple, I think a lot of times it is harder than it seems to go into situations with an open mind that looks beyond your own perspective and I will need to continue to work on that throughout this internship.
